"Imagine living in a place that gets flooded every day! That’s the challenge faced by the amazing and resilient animals of Long Island Sound’s intertidal zone.  Students meet and touch different kinds of crabs, mollusks, and gastropods, and employ their observation skills to explain how these animals are adapted to the daily and seasonal changes in their environment. At Jefferson Marine Science, students get to be real ocean explorers! We study live sea creatures, test water samples, and make discoveries just like actual marine biologists. Through fun, hands-on activities, students learn how ocean animals survive, why healthy oceans matter, and how science, technology, and math all connect to the sea. And the learning doesn't stop at the water's edge — through our Maritime Extended Learning program, students bring the ocean right into the classroom! From exploring real maritime tools and equipment to connecting with working sailors and marine professionals, every day feels like an adventure — whether we're looking at tiny organisms under a microscope or discovering how the ocean shapes our community and our planet.
